  • Your Jewelry: Flirty, Fashionable, AND Age-Appropriate?

    Dear Gila Leah,

I’m over 50 and feeling flirtier than ever! However, I’m really uncomfortable with the label of “cougar”.  I’ve more than earned my life experience – and don’t want to cheapen it. How do I look classy, not trashy? Is there jewelry that is more appropriate for my age and yet fashionable?

    Sincerely,

    Don’t Call Me Cougar

    Dear Don’t,

I encourage you to explore your personal style when purchasing or wearing jewelry; taking into consideration your body type, coloring, lifestyle and preferences.  That being said, there is no jewelry that’s off limits to you because of your, shall we say, statistical demographic (your age, that is). In fact, at this age, we have more presence and style than we did in our twenties, and can wear chunkier and larger jewelry pieces.  No need to stick with dainty!

Certainly you should be aware of current trends in jewelry fashion. Turquoise jewelry remains popular and available in many styles, from classic Southwestern to sleekly modern. (The color turquoise is flattering on nearly everyone).  Other trends are super long earrings (more than six inches long), with lightweight chains, hoops or feathers. Bracelets, particularly multiple bangles and cuff bracelets; are high fashion. As for those special black tie events – have you noticed that recent red carpet ensembles feature earrings and bracelets, much more so than necklaces? Go for glitz and glamour here, whether with diamonds and emeralds or rafts of crystals.

Keep your eye out for jewelry with bunches of metal rings; natural materials like wood, bone, shell and bark; vintage and steampunk looks. These, along with anything eco or sustainable are HOT, HOT, HOT!
