  • Spring and summer color trends

Have you ever wondered how seasonal clothing all ends up in the same color palettes? One company is responsible for determining  each season’s colors for the fashion and home decorating industries, and sets the trends for designers from Dior to Coldwater Creek.  Pantone, Inc. describes itself as “the world renowned authority on color.” According to their website, The PANTONE FASHION + HOME Color System “is a vital tool for designers in the apparel, home furnishings and interior design industries for selecting and specifying color used in the manufacture of textiles and fashion. ”

Trends in seasonal colors are conceptualized 24 months in advance for everything from fashion to makeup to industrial design, and are the results of observations on socioeconomic issues, technology, the environment, and the “needs, moods, fantasies and aspirations of consumers.”

The 2010 “Color of the Year” is a beautiful tropical turquoise, technically Pantone 15-5519.  According to Pantone, “Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise inspires thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a comforting escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.”  Turquoise has both warm and cool undertones, so it can be worn by most women.  It pairs well with browns and other neutrals, pinks, and yellows, and it creates the feel of a tropical paradise when combined with other blues. Just think of the beautiful waters of the Caribbean!

The turquoise of spring and summer is complemented by Violet, to add a sense of romance, Aurora yellow to conjure up images of the first glimpse of the sunrise, and the season’s neutral, Pink Champagne. For energy and a retro look, add Fusion Coral or the red of Tomato Puree’ for accents. The classic neutrals in greener shades of Dried Herb and Eucalyptus can act as backdrops for your wardrobe’s tropical escape.

Fall and Winter 2010 colors are titled “Mosaic,” and will include vibrant colors of the universe– saturated colors set against black– deep darks, and rich botanicals, all based on the mosaics of the environment and of the human personality.

For Spring and Summer 2011, bronze, gold and warm metallics are back.  From Urban Couture Los Angeles,” The topic is Symmetry, where we will see balance and beauty, a universal pleasing appeal with a simple complexity. It is about the vibrancy of color and the search for perfect harmonies. It is about finding a new point of view and focus and using color and shape to create a fresh new look.”
