Online dating for the over-50 generation
Why is online dating more acceptable? Our society has experienced significant changes in the past few decades. These changes make online dating a far more feasible option than it was in its infancy.
Reason #1
The divorce rate is rising. Divorce has been losing its negative stigma for many years. Divorced men and women, like other singles, want to meet other people to date. If a person has been in a long marriage, the fear of going out and trying to make new single friends may be even greater than journeying into the unknown of the online dating world. Hooking up with a stranger in a bar may seem far more intimidating than doing an online search.
Reason #2
We are living longer than ever before. So how does this affect Internet dating? We have more widows and widowers, and they, like other single people, are lonely. The desire for companionship knows no age limits. Online dating provides a social option to us baby boomers and the elderly. We are required to step out of our comfort zone. The Internet feels more doable to many, especially with technical guidance from younger family members.
Reason #3
Telecommuting and starting our own businesses from home have become a way of life for many people. As a growing number of people incorporate working from home as a way of life, the opportunity for interacting with new people at work disappears from our lives. We meet fewer people; our social network becomes smaller. There are fewer friends to fix us up. The Internet, in turn, becomes a viable alternative to isolation.
Reason #4
We have become a mobile society. Gone are the days of spending our childhood, youth, and adulthood in the same town or city. Most Americans today move significantly more times than our ancestors did. As a result, we find ourselves in the position of constantly trying to meet new people or being content with a solitary existence. The Internet is a quick way to meet other singles in our age group when we find ourselves relocated to a new city.
