The explosion of social media.
I’ve been doing some more research on the explosion of social media. It’s amazing how it has become the global way of communicating today. For instance:
- If Facebook were a country, it would be the 4th largest in the world.
- Last year, 1 in 8 couples who married met via social media (Yikes! I wonder how many of them are STILL married)
- It took TV 13 years to reach 50 million people, and the iPod 3 years to reach as many. Facebook added 100 million users in just 9 months!
- You Tube has over 100 million videos
- Wikipedia has over 13 million articles. If you were paid $1 for every time an article was posted on Wikipedia, you would make over $156 per hour!
- There are 1.5 million pieces of content (photos, blogs, tweets, etc.) posted on Facebook every day
- There are 373 million video streams on Hulu. What the heck is Hulu you say? It is a website that offers streaming video of TV shows and movies from major networks , everything from The Office to Hair (yes, the movie of the 70′s) www.hulu.com
Wow! More reasons to dive in and learn all I can about this social media revolution. At least it will give me something new to expand my mind, and challenging our minds keeps us younger, right?
For those of us in the prime of our lives, we have so much to contribute. We should be adding entries to Wikipedia, we should be connecting to our families and friends through Facebook, and we should be sharing our vast knowledge and occasional “a-ha” moments through Twitter. The Generation Y and Z “kids” can learn much from us. We just have to know how to share it through the way they communicate, through this social media that makes it easier than ever before to connect.
For those of us who need to learn how to connect better:
