How I “vision” my future
I participated in a “vision board” workshop Saturday. It was an interactive exercise where people from all walks of life came together to focus on their own personal goals for the future. Many of us were looking for something more meaningful career-wise. Some were just looking for a job or to make order out of a chaotic life. But all came away with a vision board full of pictures that portrayed the things they were drawn to, words that described their personalities, or images that visualized their aspirations, pointing them toward a journey to greater productivity and satisfaction with their careers.
For me, I was drawn to “lifestyle” pictures–food, travel, health, finance–all the things that contribute to living a vibrant and productive life. I also have a strong sense of family, a commitment to always be available to give support whenever needed. All these things are rooted in my deep Christian faith and my “servant’s heart” attitude. I don’t want to sell something to someone, I want to serve, to provide something that makes someone happier, healthier and more connected. And I only want to do it part-time so I can continue to focus on my family.
Then I had an epiphany–why not create a website for women over 50 that brings all these things together? I researched the internet, and of course found a site that was exactly what I had in mind. It was “global” in perspective, but had all the elements that I had envisioned. Then I began thinking about a more targeted approach, a website for Austin women over 50. There is a social site out there, but not one that includes reviews, tips on health and staying young, financial planning for women, single parenting, on and on and on. Yikes! Me, develop a website? I haven’t even got this Twitter thing down yet! But I am confident that I will find someone in my newly-expanded network of friends who will help me do just that, should my “vision” lead me to that end point.
Though I’m not quite finished with my vision board (I had to leave early to go bake at the UT afternoon football game, where it was too hot and the game was a blowout) I already see the clarity of vision that it has brought in a unique and fun way. I highly recommend joining a group if you are at a crossroads in your life, desiring a more meaningful focus on your career.

And when I finish my board, I’ll share it with you so you can share my vision!
